Health and Wellness Opportunities

Staying well, understanding health issues, and remaining active are very important to seniors. You are welcomed to join us for any or all of our activities!
- Health screenings are offered throughout the years at area senior centers. Some of the screenings include: skin cancer, breast cancer, stroke, hearing and vision.
- Health forums are presented by doctors, nurses and other health care professionals on a variety of topics at area senior centers.
- Physical activity classes at senior centers include: modified aerobics, line dancing, chair exercise, and classes to help prevent the problems of osteoporosis. There are other exercise classes offered for a variety of physical activity levels.
- Specialty programs, at a variety of locations, include indoor winter walking sites, stress management sessions, Senior Games, (Olympics), volleyball, tai chi, and flu clinics.
If you are age 60 years and older you may participate in the programs provided at the senior community centers. Some community programs are offered to you at age 55 and older. A fee is required in a few cases. Costs are always kept to a minimum.

* Living Healthy 
Living Healthy is a program focused on teaching participants how to become confident in their ability to manage health issues while maintaining active and fulfilling lives. The program teaches participants how to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma, emphysema and asthma. There are various opportunities to practice and master self-management techniques that will positively affect each participant's quality of life. Participants meet once a week for six weeks.
What will the sessions cover? 
The sessions will cover: 
- techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation;
- appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance;
- appropriate use of medications;
- communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals;
- nutrition; and,
- how to evaluate new treatments.
The program does not conflict with existing programs or treatment; it is designed to enhance regular treatment.

Leaders go through a fun and educational four day training, all materials and lunches are provided. Volunteer leaders are currently being recruited. All Living Healthy sessions are co-taught and people of any age can be trained to lead these sessions. One person leading the session has to have at least one chronic disease or be a caregiver of someone with a chronic disease. Friends can be trained together to lead the sessions, or partners can be assigned after completion of the training. Call RSVP at 607.231.0726 for more information.

* Active Choices 
The program is set up for all physical activity levels from the beginner to those people that are active but need some more guidance and motivation. A volunteer coach will work with each individual by maintaining regular telephone contact to develop a physical activity routine customized to the needs, abilities and goals of each participant. Contact with participants occurs over a 6 month period.

Why should I join active choices? 
You should join Active Choices because it is a great individual, tailored physical activity personal support program. It will link you with the best exercise plan to fit your lifestyle, preferences, and resources. It is delivered primarily via telephone and mail by trained Activity Coaches who are supported and supervised by staff. The program will also provide you with on going support, which will help you, learn skills to set goals, track progress and achieve success.

- A volunteer coach works with individuals through regular telephone contacts to develop an exercise routine customized to the needs, abilities and goals of each participant.
- Volunteer coaches call individuals once every other week for the first two months then once a month for a total of six months.
- We provide all the training you will need to help other seniors get and stay physically active.

* Mission Meltaway 
Mission Meltaway is a program designed to use a team approach to promote healthy living. We stress making practical life changes. One of the best aspects of the program is that you're not on your own! Participants are part of a team who works together, supports one another's efforts to be healthier and meets weekly for 8 weeks. The program offers discussions and education sessions on how to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
By joining Mission Meltaway you will:
- Be invited to a “Kick-off Bash” and “Ending Bash.”
- Receive special incentive awards.
- Become part of a team of people who are interested in being healthier.
- Receive a meal planning guide with a daily menu plan.
- Receive additional nutrition, exercise and motivational tips.
Mission Meltaway can be conducted any where in the community. Businesses, churches, schools, and senior centers are just a few places.
