Potential Flooding Conditions in Broome CountyBINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Office of Emergency Services (OES) is advising residents to be aware of the potential for local flooding. According to the National Weather Service (Binghamton Office), Broome County is expected to continue to be impacted by a rain event through Wednesday morning. Mixed rain, sleet and freezing rain will continue through this afternoon into this evening. Icing may occur especially in higher elevations that may result in sporadic power outages due to ice buildup on trees and power lines.

“We are advising residents in areas that are prone to flooding to take the necessary precautions to minimize any adverse impact due to the heavy rain and ice,” stated Brett Chellis, Director of Emergency Services. “Weather conditions are not favorable for travel and we advise residents to use extreme caution when traveling.”

The heaviest rain is expected during the overnight hours between 10:00 PM and 3:00 AM. This burst of heavy rain may result in the rapid rise of small creeks and streams that could result in flash flooding. The overall storm totals predicted are 2-3 inches this, combined with snow melt will affect major rivers Wednesday through Thursday morning. Minor to moderate flooding is predicted.

Residents that live nearby live streams and rivers should be aware of the potentially hazardous conditions. Those who are located in such areas should be ready to move and or evacuate if necessary.

Residents are asked to heed the following travel advice when navigating wet and icy roads:

• Plan for extra travel time.

• Make sure your motor vehicle is operating on a full tank of fuel.

• Watch for areas where rivers or streams may suddenly rise and flood. This includes highway dips, bridges, and low areas.

• DO NOT attempt to drive into a flooded road or underpass. Drivers should turn around and go another way.
