Governor Spitzer Re-Affirms Commitment to UpstateBINGHAMTON, NY - Governor Eliot Spitzer delivered his second State of the State Address before lawmakers and distinguished guests in the Capital this afternoon. Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala was in attendance to listen to the Governor's plan for the people of New York State. Governor Spitzer outlined several promising initiatives designed to: reduce tax burden, improve education, prompt economic growth, decrease crime and make New York more livable for young people and families.

“I was so pleased to hear Governor Spitzer re-affirm his commitment to Upstate NY by unveiling a $1 billion dollar infusion of economic development capital into our communities,” said Executive Fiala. “This earmark will provide the investment that is needed to attract businesses to Upstate New York, aid fast-growing businesses and industry sectors and support several critical “city-by-city” projects throughout the region.”

During the speech Governor Spitzer outlined his accomplishments in his first year in office, which included: cutting property and businesses taxes, slashing workers' compensation rates by over $1 billion, creating a separate economic development agency for Upstate, and developing unique blueprints for growth for each Upstate region. The Governor referenced his groundwork for the Upstate economy several times and will further discuss the region during the first ever “State of Upstate Address” in the coming week.

“His proposals are bold, visionary, and urgently needed in our community,” added Executive Fiala. “When it comes to revitalizing Upstate communities the Governor means business.”
