Executive Fiala Tours Future Incubator Space in Downtown Binghamton
NYS Senator Libous & U.S. Senators Clinton and Schumer acknowledged for their support for the incubator project
BINGHAMTON, NY - County Executive Barbara J. Fiala announced today that Broome County's new incubator, the Greater Binghamton Innovation Center, is looking for tenants. Executive Fiala was joined by Senator Thomas Libous, Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan and Lawrence Anderson of Court St. Redevelopment to introduce the new incubator building to the community Tuesday morning. The facility at 123 Court St. is currently undergoing renovations and should be ready for tenants by late February or March.
“Our goal is to provide affordable space in a supportive environment,” said Executive Fiala. “We cannot rely on companies moving into our community and bringing lots of jobs. We need to grow our own jobs.”
The Greater Binghamton Innovation Center was made possible by a $250,000 grant from the federal Housing and Urban Development Department. Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Hillary Clinton helped secure this money for Broome County. This $250,000 is being used to renovate the first floor of 123 Court St.
Senator Tom Libous secured an additional $250,000 Senate Economic Development Grant to help furnish and subsidize the facility.
“We need to make this incubator as affordable as possible in order to help these entrepreneurs flourish so we can create new high paying, high-tech jobs for Greater Binghamton,” said Senator Libous. “That is why I was delighted to secure these funds for our community and specifically for this incubator project.”
The building at 123 Court Street is owned by Court St. Redevelopment, and is being leased for at least three years by Broome County for this project. As the media saw first hand Tuesday morning, the space is under renovation and should be ready for tenants early next year.
Broome County and the Greater Binghamton Coalition partnered on the incubator project. The agencies are now soliciting applications from prospective tenants. Applications can be downloaded from www.GreaterBinghamton.com or www.gobroomecounty.com.
The applications will be reviewed by the Greater Binghamton Project Management Team (this group represents most of the economic development agencies and educational institutions in the area).
