Broome County Public Library Wraps-Up Centennial Celebration With Time Capsule Event
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Public Library will end it's month-long centennial celebration in a unique way on Saturday, October 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street Binghamton, NY. Local leaders and library officials will gather to bury a time capsule in the ground near the Library book drop at the front of the building.
This event will recreate one that occurred on October 15, 1903 when William Phelps, local businessman and President of the Library Board of Trustees placed a time capsule in the cornerstone of what was then known as the Binghamton Public Library on Exchange Street. Inside, this capsule contained the plans of the library building, a list of city officers, a copy of the minutes of the library trustees with a complete history of the library, copies of the Binghamton Leader, Evening Herald and Binghamton Republican newspapers as well as; a copy of the city directory and a map of Binghamton.
The time capsule that will be buried this Saturday will reconfigure as closely as possible the contents of the original capsule. These contents will be in archivally safe materials to protect them from the environment. A paver stone will mark the spot of the capsule and allow for future placement of a plaque.
Immediately following the dedication of the new time capsule a "Second Hundred Years Party" sponsored by the Giant Markets will be given in the Decker Room of the Library. Both events are free and open to the public.
