Kraham Announces 2nd Annual Book Recycling Fair

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Broome County Executive Jeffrey P. Kraham invites the public to the 2nd Annual Book Recycling Fair. Residents with books to donate may drop them off at the parking lot of Cornell Cooperative Extension, 840 Front Street in Binghamton, on November 1st - 4th, from 9:00am - 2:00pm. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with unloading. All types of books will be accepted including hardcover, paperbacks, and textbooks. This year for the first time, the book giveaway will take place the following week -- also at Cornell Cooperative Extension -- on November 10th and 11th, from 10:00am - 4:00pm.

The purpose of the Book Recycling Fair is twofold. First, it promotes literacy by providing a forum in which residents can exchange and obtain books free of charge. Second, it promotes reuse and recycling, which conserves our natural resources and valuable landfill space. Last year's first fair collected more than 100,000 books -- half were given away and the rest were shipped for recycling.

Joining the County in sponsoring the Book Recycling Fair are the Endwell Rotary, Free Read, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Broome County Environmental Management Council.

B.C. Transit will provide a free shuttle bus service during the giveaway days on Nov. 10th and 11th from 9:45am (first pickup at Hawley Street). The continuous ½ hour loop service from the Government Plaza on Hawley Street to Binghamton Plaza to Cooperative Extension to Hawley Street, will run until approximately 12:00pm (last pickup at Cooperative Extension).

All books are distributed free to individuals at the Book Fair (used book dealers need to register and pay a per book fee). Cash donations will be accepted, however, to help support local literacy campaigns.

For more information or to volunteer for the Fair, call the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management and speak to either Debra Smith, 607.778.2397 or Laurie Messina, 607.778.2932.
