2009 Greater Binghamton Airshow Generates Thousands of Dollars for Area Not-for-profits

(Maine, NY) The 2009 Greater Binghamton Airshow, held July 4-5th at The Greater Binghamton Airport, soared to new heights last weekend. Among the many successes of the event was the impact on local service organizations. Hundreds of area service group members donated their time over the holiday weekend in hopes of raising funds for their organizations. The results were as marvelous as the air show itself.

Nearly $30,000 will go straight to various organizations including scouting troops, booster clubs and church groups to fulfill their respective missions. Volunteers dawned aprons and orange vests in assisting with parking operations and concessions. And, many area boy scouts and cub scouts sold event programs and American flags to promote the spirit of the event, which coincided with Independence Day.
Among the many worthy causes include dental care for those in need, summer camp for low-income children and team uniforms for area sports teams. Aside from the tremendous opportunity to raise funds, volunteers were able to see the show for free.
“This certainly beats the traditional car wash or bake sale,” said David Hickling, Deputy Commissioner of Aviation and airshow organizer.
The United States Navy Blue Angels were the featured act of the weekend; volunteers got to catch a glimpse of them and other great acts in between serving burgers and parking cars.
About 20 organizations volunteered in different capacities over the weekend, compensation ranged from $100 to over $5,000 depending on participation levels and hours worked. All of the participating organizations are local with much of the funding going toward local causes in Broome County.
